That's about it, I can run the live cd but I can't install the os, or do anything much else, it locks up.  The machine is an old toshiba satellite 600mhz 128mb ram 8gb harddrive partitioned.  I just want to use it as an mp4 player, can anyone give me an idea how to install the os without it locking up.  By the way, the live cd works fine in more powerful computers, but as this one is borderline minimum specs there is obviously problems.  I would appreciate any advice.

I think that 128mb of Ram is what's causing it...you could try putting the 8gb HD into another computer and installing it there, then moving the HD back...

I had a Toshiba Satellite before with 650 proc and only 64Mb RAM and it took a while to get DL3.0 installed, but it got there. It is definitely a RAM problem, although old cdrom drives can play a part as well.

Try and reformat the harddrive, just in case a dodgy sector or something is making the OS think too much. You may also want to try and clean the laser lens on cdrom tray, they do get a bit dirty over the years and cause bad reads from Live cds.

Not sure what else to suggest, but I did get DL installed where Xubuntu locked up the system.
