I've been a satisfied Mepis user for years, but having trouble getting a wireless connection on one of my computers. Mepis users suggested I try wicd, but that's not easy to install without a connection. So I figured now is the time to try another distro. DreamLinux 3.5 has wicd in the base installation, so here I am.
Yes, wicd is there but doesn't seem to recognize my wireless card, which is a Rosewill RNX-G300EX.LX with an RT2561 chip. Other posts here indicate drivers
should load automatically, but that has not been my experience.
So I figured I would try manual installation, and wicd requests an "inf" file. But the disk that comes with my wireless card doesn't have windows drivers. (More precisely, it has a big "setup.exe" that apparently Windows would extract the drivers from, but this is not a zip file and even using XP I can't figure out how to extract anything from it without installing.)
Googling around, I found lots of hits on "rt61.inf." One of them (
http://wlety.free.fr/rt61/Rt61.INF) even appears to be the file I seek, but wicd rejects it as "invalid." Quite a few other links are in languages foreign to me, and quite a few are no longer working.
I also found nightshift's instructions at
http://dreamlinuxforums.org/index.php/topic,3030.0.html#msg20059 (apparently for an older DL), but this failed with step 3 resulting in "no rule to make config". And google found me another guy who had the same problem, who in turn refers me to
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-install-and-configure-dlink-dwl-g-520-wireless-lan-pci-card.html but that procedure gives me an "error 2."
So I am back to seeking rt61.inf. TIA for any useful direction.
