when it comes to Linux i need all the help i can get do i need drivers or do i have to set up a program to use wireless

Are you installing DL 3.5?

Generally speaking, your wireless should work OOTB; sometimes a little work needs to be done, but not always.

To check and see whether your wireless is recognized, simply open WICD. WICD can be found in the upper right hand corner in the "system tray."

If there are no wireless connections configured in there then you may have to do a little configuring.

I noticed that your post says something about Broadcom...Please check this post out and see if it is of any help.

I use Broadcom and it works out of the box. As Chad said, just click on the Wicd network icon on the top right of the panel.
It may say "no networks found", if that is the case hit "Preferences" and change the name of your card from wlan1 or wlan0 and hit refresh.

Also, the command in the terminal to see your wireless card is:

sudo iwconfig

You may also have to physically switch your card on by a button on the laptop or keyboard combination like "Fn + F2" for example.
