Re: POLL: Does Dreamlinux 3.5 work for you?
I voted no on the Gnome 3.5 release. I have it installed on a Dell Inspiron 8200. A lot does work, but I cannot get wireless to work. I have a problematic card (a Hawking card), but it is one I have had working with ndiswrapper in the past.
I installed the Windows .inf file (tnet1130.inf) and I get a message saying that the hardware is present, but I am unable to configure the network (I get an error message saying no network configuration tools were found). When I go to the CLI and try to configure with the iwconfig command, I get an error saying that device wlan0 was not found.
I am glad for any suggestions for getting this card working in Dreamlinux (as I'm not quite in a position at the moment to buy another card and because the target is always shifting I never seem to have good luck finding a compatible card). For what it is worth (maybe nothing), I did have this card working in Linux Mint and Ubuntu 8.04 but both seemed a little too heavy for my tastes. Thanks.

Re: POLL: Does Dreamlinux 3.5 work for you?
Hi Walt, post all the info you can in our Networking section and we'll see what we can do. Usually, if a piece of hardware works with one distro, it can be made to work with another.
The drivers and firmware are just open source versions of the proprietary drivers, so the distro is irrelevant.
Hopefully we can get you up and running.

What information would be most relevant? Tips for finding that information are also appreciated. Thanks.

Gnome worked on serval systems...
But it had some problems with vista boot loader, solved this by deleting all other partitions except the vista one.
Also had some grub problems, but that was a Windows Bitlocker issue.

Re: POLL: Does Dreamlinux 3.5 work for you?
Hi all,
Firstly, I beg your pardon for my poor english
Live CD tries to start X but my Samsung Syncmaster 632nw plus prints message "no optimal mode" and system returns to console.
By commanding startx, X system starts but fonts are too small and unreadable. Leaving X and editing xorg.conf, I've modified resolution from 1360x768 (monitor's default) to 1024x768.
So, fonts are readable but desktop was like a virtual desktop without scroll and awn wasn't visible.
After install system using that wrong resolution, in my first action have installed nvidia driver. I've must to correct resolution manually on Nvidia Xserver settings utility.
Then, system works fine.

Hi Granddad,
No worries about your English, this is an international forum, and I understood you perfectly.
Most distros can be a bit funny with some graphics cards and certain network cards, that is down to the manufacturers not providing drivers to the open source community. I am glad you persisted and got it working ok.

Re: POLL: Does Dreamlinux 3.5 work for you?
I haven't been using it that long yet. I installed the XFCE version. But, I've since installed KDE 3.5.10 (as well as LXDE) and use KDE as my primary desktop when running DL 3.5.
The only probs I noticed were due to the installer (and probably my lack of experience using it). For example, I couldn't figure out what the choice to update an existing GRUB was supposed to do. So, I tried it (thinking it would probably prompt me for the partition that /grub/boot/menu.lst was already installed in) and I ended up with a non-booting system. The next time I gave the installer a try, it seemed to get confused when I tried to use the add user button (probably my error again). After a few tries, I finally got to a working install (but, I ended up not installing GRUB in the MBR using the DL installer, and just added DL 3.5 to an existing GRUB install from MEPIS
.
Next time, I guess I should read the instructions (something I rarely need to do with a Linux install).
But, after getting it installed, for some reason, DL didn't identify my last ext3 partition correctly, instead assuming it was NTFS for some odd reason. Here's the way DL created /etc/fstab (/dev/sda10 is actually ext3, not ntfs)
Code:
# created by Dreamlinux Installer
proc
/proc
proc
defaults
0
0
/dev/sda7
/

/dev/sda5

noauto,users,exec

/dev/sda6

noauto,users,exec

/dev/sda8
/mnt/sda8

noauto,users,exec

/dev/sda9

ntfs-3g

/dev/sdc1
/mnt/sdc1

noauto,users,exec,umask=000

But, I just edited /etc/fstab and corrected it, and now I can mount sda10 OK, too.
DL 3.5 is running fine so far (I use it as time permits), working just fine with my wireless, graphics, etc. It will take a bit of work to get KDE tweaked the way I like it though (something I realize you guys don't officially support).
I like the idea of a distro that's easy to use for creating customized remasters, persistant installs on USB flash drives, etc. Easy Install is also a neat idea (and it's worked fine so far when I've tried it).

Re: POLL: Does Dreamlinux 3.5 work for you?
Hi Jim, to be honest with that partitioning scheme, I am pretty pleased that all that the installer did was mistake one Ext3 for an Ntfs
Considering nelsongs wrote the installer from scratch, that's not bad going.
The add user has been removed from the new installer as people were mistaking it for "applying" themselves as a single user, so that was a bit confusing.
When you get used to an installer, you realise just how good it is. Having everything on one interface without having to keep clicking "next" is a God-send for me (impatient).
As for Kde, I loathed it, but recently I have been using it on Backtrack 3, and it has grown on me, only because BT3 has organised it well.
The standard Kde for me is a mess. I do think that a Dreamlinux Kde edition could be quite appealing though, especially if it was done right. The only other Kde OS I know of which impressed me was PcLinuxOS, they also did a good job of arranging Kde well.
Anyway, glad you have DL up and running now.

After voting NO to both XFCE and CNOME versions here is the reason that explains it:

Re: POLL: Does Dreamlinux 3.5 work for you?
Yes, XfCE worked right out of the box. LiveCD and hard drive install. Installer worked great. XfCE required some tweaking to get it set up to my preferences, but it worked. And, it is now set up according to my preferences. The only problem ever, was Xsane not recognizing my HP all-in-one as a scanner. However, a simple acceptable solution (using the built in card reader on the HP all-in-one) is working perfectly. This also seems to be more of an Xsane problem, since the
HP Officejet 6310xi
was not listed on the Xsane website as a recognozed scanner.
