XFCE v. GNOME
Maybe I just haven't found the info yet, but I was wondering if I should use XFCE or GNOME when setting up DL3. I figured this would also be good information for other newbies.

Re: XFCE v. GNOME
My own oppinion: XFCE is good for old/weak computer, consisting of less than 512MB RAM and a small graphic card; GNOME is a bit more demanding and needs more ressources.
In general i personally prefer XFCE

Re: XFCE v. GNOME
It is hard to recommend one over the other.
It really comes down to personal taste.
XCFE is slightly faster than Gnome so it may be preferable for really old machines, on the other hand, (IMHO) Gnome is more customizable.
Use LiveCD to play around with both environments and choose the one you like better. Simple
FWIW, I run Gnome on a 900Mhz PIII with 384 MB of RAM without a hitch.

IMHO this indeed is the way to see which one you prefer

I run DL 3.0 with Gnome on a 933 Mhz PIII with only 256 Mb and indeed also without a hitch.
I can even turn compiz on and still have accepatable performance. But of course YMMV.

It's a Toshiba laptop so I am stuck with a Nvidia nforce 2go (or something similar) with 16 MB Ram.
Of course I can forget compiz-fusion and cube but other than that it really runs nicely - still noticeably faster than Windows XP SP2

I fully agree with the statement on XP SP2!
Too bad about compiz-fusion ... it runs nicely on a PIII (see attachment).
For reference, this is my graphics card (obtained through lspci)
Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (rev 01)

Would you please stop comparing ANY Linux distro to WIN; it is unfair as they are still learning from us and enjoy their vista.
